Laparoscopic Adrenalectomy

The first laparoscopic adrenalectomy at Beth Israel Medical Center was recently performed by Joseph Wagner, M.D., Harris Nagler, M.D. and Richard Friedman, M.D.

This is an exciting advancement which minimizes the morbidity of the procedure and reduces health care costs. A recently published series from the National Cancer Institute, on which Dr. Wagner is a co-author (Urology, 49:673, 1997), illustrated the dramatically shorter hospital stay and convalescent period associated with laparoscopic adrenalectomy.

The procedure may be indicated for all adrenal tumors, including biochemically functional tumors such as pheochromocytoms, aldosteronomas and Cushing's adenomas.
