CHILD LIFE FELLOWSHIP

For the individual with a commitment to advance professionally as a Child Life Specialist, opportunities provided to further develop clinical expertise in a supervised setting for one year.

REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION: Have completed a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree, master’s preferred, with a minimum of 10 courses in child life, child development, child and family studies or closely related courses, documented by an original official transcript from the college/university.

EXPERIENCE: Must have successfully completed child life clinical experience of at least 480 hours, documented on letterhead or by certificate from each clinical experience site with hours and dates verified by supervising Certified Child Life Specialist (CCLS). The clinical experience hours may be completed in more than one site.

CERTIFICATION: Certified Child Life Specialist preferred.

ABOUT THE FELLOWSHIP
Gain clinical experience at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center with children and families in the following areas:

1) In-patient pediatric unit covering general diagnoses, with focuses on hematology and infectious diseases
2) On-call coverage for Surgical Unit and Pediatric Emergency medicine.

Provide services to a culturally diverse, urban population of patients, ranging in age from infancy through adolescence, with a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions of pediatrics, critical diagnosis and traumatic injuries, and their families, in the inpatient, surgical and emergency settings.

Develop skills in working with an organized health care team in these settings.

Learn how to develop and implement additional aspects of Child Life Programming such as supervising para-professional child life staff and volunteers.

Upon successful completion of the program, the fellow will be awarded a Certificate jointly by St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center’s Department of Pediatrics’ Child Life Program and the Starlight Children’s Foundation NY*NJ*CT.
