The program is designed to provide physicians who have completed primary
specialty training in internal medicine, with intensive training to
prepare for careers in academic or clinical gastroenterology. The training
program is for a minimum of three years divided into intensive clinical
training for the first eighteen months followed by a focused experience
in one area of clinical or academic gastroenterology. The period of
clinical training focuses on the develop- ment of the skills needed
for a consultant in the practice of gastroenterology including instruction
in gastrointestinal diagnostic and therapeutic procedures involving
the gastrointestinal/biliary tract and liver. The second half of the
training program is focused on one area of expertise such as advanced
endoscopy, hepatology, nutri- tion, gastrointestinal oncology, motility
or basic research. Fellows rotate through the Hepatology Division at
Mount Sinai Hospital Center and receive level two training in liver
disease and transplantation. Andrew
