A child's academic progress is directly linked to his or her underlying language skills. As such, to uncover the possible causes of a learning problem, a comprehensive speech-language evaluation examines all aspects of a child's ability to comprehend and to formulate verbal communication. Speech production is assessed by examining oral-motor skills, articulation, phonological processing and speech intelligibility.

Both formal and informal methods of assessment are employed to determine the child's ability to process and understand verbal language. Expressive communication is also analyzed with regard to its level of complexity, richness of vocabulary, and meaningful use.

Examination of the child's phonological awareness skills sheds light on factors contributing to reading and writing difficulties. Upon completion of the assessment, recommendations are made for therapies and educational approaches to address any specific difficulties.
