Comprehensive Gynecologic Cancer Care

The Gynecologic Oncology specialists at the Long Island College Hospital offer a comprehensive service for patients with malignancies of the pelvic area. The Gynecologic Cancers are being fought with much greater success, and the options for radical treatments are more varied than in the past. We have renowned experts in the latest minimally invasive (Laparoscopic) surgical techniques and in the most difficult Gynecologic surgeries. Patients with Gynecologic Cancers will find all their needs met here.

As a teaching hospital, we train both resident physicians and medical students. LICH Gynecologic Oncologists have access to the most up-to-date clinical research. Collaboration with other medical institutions (including our sister institutions in Continuum Health Partners, Inc.- Beth Israel Medical Center, and St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center) and national study groups ensures that our patients receive the most current treatments available.

Our basic services include:

• Cancer prevention counseling.
• Early detection of cancer or pre-cancer conditions.
• Diagnosis of cancer.
• Cancer management.

Diagnosis

Among the diagnostic techniques available at LICH are:
Genetic counseling.
• Colposcopy - viewing of the cervix, vagina or vulva with a telescope.
• LEEP- Office biopsy of the cervix, for the treatment and diagnosis of pre-invasive cervical lesions.
• Radioimmunoassay - a highly effective laboratory testing method for diagnosing cancer.
Ultrasound examination.

Surgery

With more than 15 years of experience in minimally invasive surgical techniques (Laparoscopy and Endoscopy), the Gynecologic Oncology staff is well versed in all types of laparoscopic surgery. Because only small incisions in the abdominal area are required, most patients can be discharged within 24 hours and resume normal activities within one to two weeks. This compares to a five-day hospital stay and a five-to-six-week recuperation following traditional surgery. Patients after laparoscopy usually have less pain than patients after traditional surgery. Another advantage of laparoscopic surgery is that additional treatment, if required, can begin sooner.

Our staff, which performs close to 400 operations annually, is also experienced in such complex surgery as pelvic exenteration, in which pelvic organs are removed in order to cure the cancer, and these organs are reconstructed to restore almost normal function.

Comprehensive Gynecologic Cancer Care

We, at LICH, have access to the latest state-of-the-art chemotherapy via a team approach that brings together Pathologists, Medical Oncologists, Radiation Oncologists, Nutritionists, and counselors, to ensure that both the physical and the emotional health are treated.

Gynecologic cancer patients can be assured that the most effective diagnosis and treatment options are available to them here at LICH.
