| The
Mary Polak Oenslager Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Long Island
College Hospital serves women throughout every stage of life. From adolescence,
during which they can be served by our Young
Women’s Clinic, through childbirth and beyond, women will find
here a staff of caring professionals, modern facilities, and the latest
treatments and procedures.
In our department there are 14 full-time faculty and approximately 40
voluntary attending physicians. By design, we have gathered a staff with
a wide range of training, clinical experiences, and diverse cultural backgrounds.
Fourteen languages are spoken here! Our staff also includes certified
nurse midwives, nurse practitioners, nurses, nutritionists, social workers,
and support staff.
Our teaching mission ensures that our staff is on the cutting edge. LICH
has one of the oldest Ob-Gyn residency programs in the country and is
a primary teaching affiliate of the State University of New York Health
Sciences Center in Brooklyn. As teachers, our faculty must be current
on all therapies and procedures. The research they conduct with medical
students and residents provides valuable insight for both physicians and
patients.
Obstetrics
More than 2,700 babies are delivered at LICH each year. Our newly renovated
Labor and Delivery suites are comfortable and personal. Our home-like
birthing center, managed by a team of
certified nurse midwives, offers a family-centered option for women with
normal pregnancies.
Additionally, our patients have access to:
• A team of Maternal Fetal Medicine experts,
obstetricians with specialized training in high-risk pregnancies.
• The latest ultrasound tools and techniques,
including 3D and 4D ultrasound and image archiving systems that give doctors
instant access to information about your pregnancy and your baby’s
development.
• An array of sophisticated pre-natal tests,
including Chorionic Villius Sampling (CVS), which can detect genetic abnormalities
earlier than amniocentesis. LICH is one of the few hospitals in the NY
metropolitan area offering CVS testing.
• 24/7 availability of Anesthesiologists, Pediatric Neo-natal Specialists
and Pediatric residents.
Gynecology
Whether it’s a routine annual health maintenance examination or
a consultation for a complex gynecologic condition, LICH staff can assist
you. Our department’s services are comprehensive, including a holistic
approach to women’s health care by incorporating nutritionists,
social workers, and other health care professionals at one location.
In addition to providing standard gynecologic care, cancer screening and
consultation for family planning and pregnancy options, our department
has expertise in:
• Minimally invasive surgery, including laparoscopy.
• Gynecologic Oncology.
• Gynecologic Urology, including surgical
and non-surgical treatment for urinary incontinence.
• Endocrinology and Infertility treatments,
including In Vitro Fertilization (IVF).
• Health education through a wide range
of workshops for women and their families.
The Ob-Gyn Department at LICH offers women a full range of high-quality
services in one location. We look forward to serving you.
