Michael G. Neuwirth, M.D.Michael G. Neuwirth, M.D., director of the Spine Institute, is a renowned orthopaedic surgeon and a leader in the field of spinal deformities, particularly scoliosis. Dr. Neuwirth rejoins the medical staff at Beth Israel after serving at New York University/Tisch Hospital as an associate attending and an associate clinical professor of orthopaedics. Before that, he was an attending at both Beth Israel Medical Center and the Hospital for Joint Diseases from 1979 until 1988. He was named chief of the scoliosis services at the Hospital for Joint Diseases in 1988 and chief of the combined spine services there in 1991. He is board certified in orthopaedic surgery. Dr. Neuwirth has a broad range of experience in orthopaedics, with special emphasis on diseases of the spine. A frequent lecturer to local as well as international groups, Dr. Neuwirth is also the author of the comprehensive book, The Scoliosis Handbook, and has published extensively on the subject of scoliosis. He is an expert on various techniques for combined anterior and posterior spinal fusion, alternative techniques for anterior extrapleural thoracoplasty for scoliosis and theutilization of hydroxyapatite enhancement for posterior spinal instrumentation fixation. A native New Yorker, Dr. Neuwirth earned his undergraduate degree with distinction from Cornell University, and his medical degree (Cum Laude) from S.U.N.Y. Downstate Medical School. He completed his residency in orthopaedics in 1978 at the Hospital for Joint Diseases where he also received the hospital’s Alumni Award for Outstanding Resident. He then became a research fellow in spinal surgery for Rush-Presbyterian/St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. After completing his training, Dr. Neuwirth returned to New York and joined the City Hospital Center at Elmhurst as a spinal consultant. On the academic side, Dr. Neuwirth joined the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 1979 as an assistant clinical professor of orthopaedics. In 1995, he was named associate clinical professor of orthopaedics at the New York University School of Medicine. |
