Services

The Spine Institute at Beth Israel Medical Center is one of the first programs of its kind in New York City to combine all diagnostic and treatment services for back pain and spinal disorders under one roof.

Conveniently located at 10 Union Square East, within the Phillips Ambulatory Care Center, the Spine Institute features a talented multidisciplinary team of health professionals from orthopaedics, physiatry, neurology, anesthesiology, physical and occupational therapy and psychology. The 17,000 square foot facility includes evaluation rooms, diagnostic testing rooms, procedure rooms, rehabilitation facilities, an aerobic training room, a yoga and meditation room and shower/changing rooms.

To pinpoint the exact causes and location of back pain, the Institute uses the most technologically advanced equipment for accurate diagnosis, including:

  • Electromyography (EMG)
  • High-speed Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
  • Discography
  • Bone Scan
  • CAT scan
  • Myelography
  • X-ray

The Spine Institute specializes in the treatment of congenital, chronic or acute spinal disorders as well as back problems of any kind or degree, including:

  • Back pain from strains and sprains
  • Herniated discs and other disc problems
  • Scoliosis
  • Traumatic injuries
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Spinal deformities
  • Spinal tumors

Noninvasive treatment options at the Spine Institute include pain management, rehabilitation, and physical and occupational therapy. For some patients, epidural injections and then increased activity are an ideal alternative to surgery.

When surgical intervention is needed, the Spine Institute uses the latest in technology and innovation to perform the least invasive surgery possible with the most effective and safe results. State-of-the-art, minimally invasive microsurgical and arthroscopic techniques are used on an inpatient or outpatient basis for less serious interventions, including discectomies, while major surgical capabilities are available for more complicated problems.
